SAN ANTONIO — No. 25 Florida Atlantic made a run late and handed UTSA a 10-4 setback on Friday night in the series opener at Roadrunner Field.
The score bounced back-and-forth through the first five innings of action but the visiting Owls (21-5, 5-2 C-USA) scored seven runs in the last three innings.
UTSA (14-12, 4-3 C-USA) jumped on the board early scoring one run in the bottom second.
Tyler Straub led off the frame with single to center and made his way to third on a base hit and sacrifice bunt. A batter later, C.J. Pickering hit a grounder to third to drive in Straub.
Florida Atlantic evened the score in the fourth, but in the home half, John Bormann crossed home plate to give the Roadrunners a 2-1 lead. Bormann reached on a one-out walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Horacio Correa III then laced a ball through the right side to score the senior catcher.
FAU took a 3-2 lead after plating a pair of runs in the fifth, but the Roadrunners answered back in the bottom of the frame when Jesse Baker hit a one-out single to score Kevin Markham from second.
Brock Hartson continued to push through and logged six-plus innings, but he faced one batter in the seventh to get charged with Florida Atlantic’s go-ahead run. Hartson allowed four runs on a season-high nine hits.
Florida Atlantic combined for seven runs in the final three innings to snap its two-game losing streak.
David McKay picked up his first win of the season as he worked 1.2 innings in relief. McKay scattered three hits and did not allow a run or walk.
UTSA tacked on a run late in the game as Baker blasted his fifth homer of the season to left center.
All nine Roadrunners recorded at least one hit.
Brendon Sanger led the Owls offense with a season-high four hits, to go with two runs, a double and an RBI.
The weekend series will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
