SAN ANTONIO — UTSA pounded out seven extra-base hits, including four home runs, to run-rule visiting Stephen F. Austin 11-0 on Monday night at Roadrunner Field.
Kendall Burton went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a double and RBI for the Roadrunners (20-8), who scored in every inning and got homers from Courtney Buchman, Madison Kinley, Megan Low and Tess Soefje. In the circle, Chelsea Parker and Lizzy Fox combined to allow just three hits en route to the team’s first shutout of the campaign.
UTSA got off to a fast start against the Lady Jacks (7-16) and starting pitcher Makayla Sikes as Burton doubled to open the bottom of the first. She came around to score on Low’s one-out homer, which cleared the scoreboard bounced off the roof of Alvarez Hall dormitory beyond left-center field.
The Roadrunners then used three round-trippers in the second to extend the lead to 7-0. Soefje and Kinley started the frame with back-to-back homers before Stephen F. Austin went to the bullpen. Reliever Hannah Welch recorded an out, but a pair of singles from Jade Smith and Burton set the table for Buchman’s three-run homer to cap the inning.
In the third, Soefje reached after getting hit by a pitch and she motored around the bases on Angelica Niño’s RBI double to right-center. Smith then drove in Kinley, who also was hit by a pitch, with an infield single before Burton pushed the advantage to 10-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.
UTSA’s final run came in the fourth when Lauren White touched home on a wild pitch that followed a walk and double from Taylor Oberg.
The run-support was more than enough for Parker and Fox in the circle. Parker improved to 7-2 after she surrendered just one hit and a walk in three scoreless innings, while Fox allowed a pair of hits in her two spotless frames.
UTSA will close its eight-game home stand this weekend with a three-game series against UAB (21-5, 6-0 C-USA). The set will start with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
