BECKLEY, W.Va. — Two three-run home runs and 15 hits led to a sweep of the Marshall Herd Sunday afternoon at Epling Stadium by a score of 16-8.
UTSA added to its home run total on the season with four through the three-game series. Jesse Baker blasted his second of the series in the second inning scoring half the team’s run in the frame.
Matt Hilston also hit his second of the series in the top eighth scoring John Bormann and Geonte Jackson.
The Roadrunners (12-7, 3-0 C-USA) jumped to an early start in the series finale as the team scored six runs in the second inning.
Bormann led off with a double and later scored on Trent Bowles’ RBI single. Three batters later, Ben Brookover picked up two RBIs as Bowles and Hilston crossed home on a double to center. Baker completed the Birds’ scoring in the second on his second homer of the series driving in Brookover and Kevin Markham.
In the bottom second, Marshall cut into the Roadrunners’ lead with four runs, but UTSA responded with a lone run in the top third to take a 7-4 lead.
Two Marshall (6-11, 0-3 C-USA) runs in the bottom third and another in the fourth evened the score at seven runs apiece.
Aaron Burns, who entered in the fourth inning, tossed 6.0 innings in relief to earn the win. Burns gave up one run on four hits and struck out five and walked one.
UTSA put up another three runs in the sixth and six in the eighth to complete the series sweep over the Herd.
Fernando Guerrero was charged with the loss in 2.0 innings of work. The freshman right-hander allowed four runs on three hits and walked one with two strikeouts.
All nine starters tallied at least one hit in the win.
Brookover led all Roadrunners with three hits, to go with three runs, two RBIs and two doubles.
The Roadrunners will remain on the road for a 6 p.m. match up with I-35 rival Texas State (5-10-1) on Tuesday, March 17.
