SAN ANTONIO — Boone Mokry threw five scoreless innings in his first start of the season and he combined with four pitchers to lead UTSA to a 3-0 victory against Houston Baptist on Tuesday night at Roadrunner Field.
Mokry (1-0) gave up just two hits, walked one and struck out three in his second appearance of the spring. Patrick Herbelin tossed the final inning, including back-to-back punchouts to clinch the shutout, to earn his second save of the year.
UTSA (9-7) scored all three of its runs in the second inning againsts Huskies starter Cody Toal (0-1).
Geonte Jackson, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the decisive frame, scored the first run for the Roadrunners on a passed ball after advancing to third on a Matt Hilston double. Hilston then came around for the second score of the inning on a Skyler Valentine sacrifice fly. C.J. Pickering scored the final run for UTSA on a Logan Kinder's triple.
Houston Baptist (7-9) threatened by putting the first two hitters on base in the ninth, but Herblein quelled the rally.
UTSA will open Conference USA play this weekend against Marshall (6-8). The three-game series is scheduled to begin with a 2 p.m. (CT) contest on Friday in Beckley, W.Va.
