WICHITA, Kan. — Diogo Casa and Tito Moreiras each were victorious in singles and doubles action to lead UTSA to a 5-2 upset of No. 61 George Washington on Saturday afternoon at Genesis Health Club.
Playing their second neutral-court match of the season and second consecutive indoors, the Roadrunners (2-3) rebounded from a 7-0 blanking at the hands of Wichita State on Friday with a convincing victory against their second top-75 opponent of the year.
Casa teamed with Joel Rubio for a 6-3 defeat of Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Cahit Kapukiran at No. 3 doubles and Moreiras paired with Fabian Brand for a 7-5 triumph on the second court to clinch the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for UTSA.
Tomas Stillman, the ITA's 42nd-ranked singles player, put the Birds up 2-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Danil Zelenkov at the top singles spot. The win upped his record to 3-2 in dual matches.
The Colonials (1-4) answered with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 decision by Chris Reynolds over Rubio at No. 5 to make it 2-1, but the Roadrunners responded by winning the next two to finish to secure the win.
Moreiras edged Kapukiran at No. 4 in a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) win to also improve to 3-2 on the year, and Christian Carrillo provided the fourth point for UTSA with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory against Hadjigeorgiou on the sixth court.
Francisco Dias, who is ranked No. 109 by ITA, outlasted Yannick Junger, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (2) at No. 2, while Casa scored a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 win on the third court to provide the final 5-2 margin.
The Roadrunners will return home to host UT Arlington at 2 p.m. next Friday, Feb. 13, at the UTSA Tennis Center.
