Roadrunners drop opening game to McNeese State in 10 innings, 6-5

LAKE CHARLES, La. — UTSA scored a pair of runs in the eighth to force extra innings, but McNeese State scored in the 10th to claim a 6-5 victory on Friday evening at Cowboy Diamond.

The Roadrunners (6-3) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with the setback.

UTSA knotted the score when Matt Hilston drew a bases-loaded walk to score Geonte Jackson and Cory LaPeze followed with another free pass to John Bormann, which allowed Kevin Markham to even the score at five runs apiece.

However, a defensive miscue by the Roadrunners allowed for the inning to remain alive when Lewis Guilbeau reached first. The left fielder eventually came around to score on a RBI single off the bat of Connor Lloyd.

Collin Kober (1-0) earned the win after striking out two and giving up just one hit in two innings of work.

Chance Kirby (1-1) took the loss for UTSA. The right-hander struck out a season-best five batters in 3.2 frames, but he gave up one run on two hits and walked one.

Trent Bowles led the Roadrunners with three hits, including a pair of doubles.

UTSA took advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the third when a hit by pitch, base hit and walk all led to runs being scored.

In the home half of the inning, McNeese State (6-4) cut into the deficit when Kris Molter crossed home on a single.

The Cowboys plated four runs int the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

The series will conclude with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
