LAS CRUCES, N.M. — UTSA opened a busy weekend of action by shutting out Division II No. 9 Texas-Permian Basin on Friday at the NMSU Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (5-3) did not drop a set en route to their second consecutive victory, while the Falcons (2-4) dropped their fourth straight match.
The No. 3 doubles tandem of Lina Hallgren and Jacobea Junger got things going with an easy 6-1 victory against Krissy Chavez and Sydney Holdampf. UTSA's top duo of Nicole Karaklis and Alena Shichkova followed with a 6-4 triumph against Lisa Roslanova and Andrea Villalobos to give the Birds an early 1-0 lead.
UTSA continued its winning ways in the six singles contests.
After Miriam Rosell Canudas blanked Shelby Greene at the No. 2 position, Junger made quick work of Roslanova at the top spot, 6-0, 6-1. Hallgren then cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Chavez on court five to clinch the match for the Roadrunners.
UTSA's other victories of the afternoon came from Shichkova at the No. 3 slot (6-2, 6-1 vs. Alexandra Maytubby), Irene Gandara Gonzalez at the No. 6 position (6-3, 6-0 vs. Holdampf) and Karaklis on the fourth court (6-3, 7-5 vs. Villalobos).
Karaklis improved to a team-leading 6-1 this spring.
The Roadrunners will continue their weekend road trip at 11 a.m. (CT) on Saturday when they square off with New Mexico State (4-3).
