Southern Miss stuns Roadrunners on Thursday night, 61-59

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA led by one in the final seconds of Thursday’s contest before Southern Miss managed to net a 3-pointer at the buzzer to defeat the Roadrunners, 61-59, at the Convocation Center.

The Lady Eagles (19-8, 12-4 C-USA) rallied back in the second half after back-to-back steals led to a 14-2 run to take a 47-40 lead.

UTSA (13-14, 8-7 C-USA) eventually came back to tie the game and take a 59-58 lead on a Mathilde Hergott triple with 1:45 left in regulation. The Roadrunners managed to keep the visiting team off the board as Southern Miss missed two field goal attempts.

With three seconds on the clock, the Lady Eagles managed to get a shot off before time expired with one second, as Alex Coyne launched one from three-point range, her only field goal of the night, to give Southern Miss the stunning victory.

Three Roadrunners scored in double figures with Kamra King leading the way with a season-best 21 points, 16 of which came in the opening half. Meanwhile, Mannasha Bell notched her team-leading sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Akunna Elonu added a 12-point, seven-rebound performance.

Tamara Jones and Jerontay Clemons each had a dozen points for Southern Miss.

UTSA will welcome Louisiana Tech (14-12, 9-6 C-USA) for its final home game of the season at noon on Sunday (please note the time/day change).
