SAN ANTONIO — Four UTSA pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout and the Roadrunners blanked Incarnate Word by a score of 12-0 on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field.
Aaron Burns (2-1) hurled five innings of one-hit, scoreless baseball to earn the win. The right-hander struck out three and walked one.
UTSA (6-2), which won its fourth consecutive game, allowed only five UIW base runners in its first shutout of the season. The Roadrunners also tallied their most hits of the year with 16.
The Birds opened up the midweek contest with a four-run first inning that saw all nine hitters come to the plate and they combined for six hits.
The Roadrunners tacked on another run in the second when John Bormann crossed home for the second time.
Two innings later, the home team plated three more runs, including a lead-off homer off the bat of Tyler Straub, which was his first of the season. Matt Hilston and Skyler Valentine also scored for the second time of the day on back-to-back hits.
UTSA scored once in each of the following two innings and twice in the eighth to cap off the scoring.
Straub and Geonte Jackson each had three hits to match season bests, while Mitchell Matulia went 2-for-5 with a run and he tied a career high with three RBIs.
Incarnate Word (4-5) starter John Shull was tagged with the loss in 1.2 innings of action. Shull (0-1) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk in addition to striking out two.
UTSA will hit the road this weekend for a three-game series at former Southland Conference foe McNeese State (4-4). Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m.
