NEW ORLEANS, La. — Led by a 41st-place showing from Aimee Ponte, UTSA tied with Clemson for 14th place at this week's Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, which concluded on Tuesday at English Turn Golf & Country Club (6,189 yards/par 72).
The Roadrunners entered the day one shot behind the Tigers after rounds of 319 and 313, but fired a 312 on the strength of a 74 that included a trio of birdies from Brogan Townend to catch Clemson, which fired a 313, at 944.
Meanwhile, Ponte finished 41st with a 233 (80-72-81) to lead all Roadrunners in the 81-player field. Townend was close behind in a tie for 51st with a 237 (79-84-74), while Nikki Long tied for 63rd with a 239 (82-78-79). Libby Thomas and Becky McGeehan placed 75th (80-84-78—242) and 78th (80-79-86—245), respectively.
In a field packed with 11 top-50 squads, No. 17 LSU captured the team title with an 874 behind individual co-champions Caroline Nistrup (68-73-71—212) and Madelene Sagstrom (71-70-71—212). No. 43 Florida (886), No. 6 UCLA (886), 12th-ranked Arizona (892) and No. 31 Tulane (892) rounded out the top five.
The Roadrunners will return to action at next weekend's SunTrust Gator Invitational (March 6-8).
