UTSA finishes off series sweep of Bryant on Sunday, 10-4

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA scored runs in each of the first seven innings and the Roadrunners finished of a series sweep against Bryant on Sunday afternoon with a 10-4 victory at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA (5-2) opened up the series finale with a four-run first inning. Eight of the starting nine made a plate appearance. Tyler Straub was the first to score for UTSA as he crossed the plate on a RBI single from John Bormann. Two batters later, Skyler Valentine scored on Trent Bowles’ sacrifice fly. Geonte Jackson drove in the final two runs of the frame on a two-out, 2-RBI single.

The Roadrunners then scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, keeping the Bryant offense at bay.

The visiting Bulldogs (0-3) scored early in the game with a run in the first and followed with two runs in the fourth.

Left-handed pitcher Cody Brannon (1-0) earned his second start of the year and tossed 6.1 innings to earn the win. The senior did not allow a walk but scattered four hits and three runs, while striking out three batters. Brannon also had four 1-2-3 innings during his time on the bump.

UTSA scored its final two runs of the game in the bottom sixth. After two straight outs to start the inning, relief pitcher Alex Lagos walked C.J. Pickering and then gave up a double to score the third baseman. Matt Hilston reached first after a fielding error by the Bulldogs kept the inning alive and allowed for Bowles to score for the final run of the game.

Bryant did not go down quietly as it scored in the top eighth and then hit back-to-back singles in the top ninth to put runners in scoring position. A grounder to third ended the inning and secured the sweep for UTSA.

The Roadrunners only used two arms in the win as Jeremy Filipek threw the final 2.2 innings. The fellow senior also did not allow a walk but gave up six hits and one run.

BU starting pitcher Jack Patterson was charged with the loss in 2.1 innings of action. Patterson gave up six runs on four hits, while striking out one and walking three.

Straub and Jackson each contributed season bests of three hits apiece. Jackson also had three RBI for a season-high, while Straub had a pair of stolen bases.

UTSA will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 24, when it welcomes neighboring Incarnate Word (4-4) to the Bird Bath. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.​
