SAN ANTONIO — UTSA snapped its two-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory against Northwestern State on Sunday.
The Roadrunners (4-3) dropped the doubles point with losses on courts Nos. 1 and 3, which gave the Lady Demons (1-6) an early 1-0 lead.
Jacobea Junger and Alena Shichkova quickly fell by a score of 6-1 at the top spot to Natalya Krutova and Tatiana Larina before Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Miram Rosell Canudas tallied a 6-2 victory against Polina Ivanova and Barbora Kollarova. However, Northwestern State earned the point after Emily Kerr and Aliona Ladutska dispatched of Lina Hallgren and Nicole Karklis by a 6-4 count.
UTSA answered with three consecutive singles victories at Nos. 3, 2, and 6 to jump in front, 3-1.
Shichkova gave the Birds their first point with a 6-1, 7-6 trimuph against Ladutska, while Rosell Canudas defeated Krutova in straight sets (7-6 [10-8], 6-0). Irene Gandara Gonzalez then followed suit over Kerr in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
Ivanova’s got past Hallgren at the No. 5 spot in a competitive 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 contest kept the Lady Demons alive with their lone singles point.
However, the Roadrunners continued their success with a combination of victories by Junger at the first spot and Karaklis at No. 4.
Junger downed Larina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to clinch the victory for UTSA and Karaklis improved to 5-1 this spring with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win against Kollarova.
UTSA will return to action on Friday, Feb. 27, when it plays at New Mexico State (4-3). First serve is slated for 3 p.m. (CT).
