No. 6 Texas breaks open close contest late to defeat UTSA on Tuesday night

AUSTIN — No. 6 Texas broke open a one-run game late en route to a 14-2 victory against UTSA on Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Longhorns (3-2) kept the Roadrunners (2-2) off the scoreboard through the first three innings before John Bormann crossed the plate on a Skylar Valentine RBI single, which cut Texas' lead in half, 2-1.

Two innings later, Valentine laced a ball through the left side that scored Tyler Straub from second to make it 3-2 in the top sixth.

However, the Longhorns put up four runs in the seventh before batting around an inning later in scoring seven runs on seven hits.

Aaron Burns (0-1) was charged with the loss in 1.1 innings of action after allowing one run on four hits.

Texas starter Connor Mayes (1-0) was the pitcher of record after scattering two hits and striking out a pair of batters in three frames.

Kevin Markham and Valentine each had two hits for the Roadrunners.

Tres Barrera led Texas with a 5-for-6 performance with a home run and six RBIs. Barrera became the first player since 2010 to tally six RBI in a game.

The Longhorns outhit UTSA, 20-8.

The Roadrunners will begin a four-game home stand this weekend when they welcome Bryant (0-0) for a three-game set that begins at 6 p.m. on Friday.
