SAN ANTONIO — UTSA got back on the winning track with a 6-1 victory against Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners (3-4) beat the Golden Eagles (4-3) for the first time in three all-time meetings and they improved to 2-1 against Conference USA competition this year.
UTSA took a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point. The senior duo of Yannick Junger and Tomas Stillman beat Chao-Yu Huang and Wen-Po Tseng at No. 1, 6-4, while Fabian Brand and Tito Moreiras clinched with a 6-4 victory of their own against Daniel Merker and Tarun Surat on the second court.
Stillman, the ITA’s No. 72-ranked singles player, gave the home team a 2-0 advantage with a quick 6-1, 6-1 decision against Surat at the top spot. The Harlingen native won for the third straight outing to run his record to 5-2 on the season.
Christian Carrillo took care of Merker at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph and Junger followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Tseng at No. 2 to clinch the match for the Roadrunners.
Play continued on the other courts, where Moreiras picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory against Huang at No. 3 and Mark Ginting edged Mikhail Esipov, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, at No. 6.
The Roadrunners will stay home and host Lamar (5-2) at 11 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 21.
