SAN MARCOS — Chandler Moore allowed just two runs and struck out seven in seven innings to lead Texas Tech to a 7-2 victory against UTSA on Sunday in the final game of the CenturyLink Classic for both squads.
Kendall Burton went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Roadrunners (7-3), who finished the event with a 3-2 mark. Lindsie Knowles, Angelica Nino and Erica Sanchez also finished with hits for UTSA.
Meanwhile, Moore surrendered two runs on five hits with three walks in the complete-game victory for the Red Raiders (5-5). Brittany Warnecke paced the offense by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs.
Texas Tech scored all of its runs in the first three innings to provide Moore with plenty of run-support.
Warnecke opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and Kristi Belshe added an RBI single for a 3-0 lead. The Red Raiders doubled the score an inning later with three more runs and tacked on another in the third to push the advantage to 7-0.
UTSA struck back and broke the shutout in the top of the fifth with a pair of scores.
Knowles started the frame with a single and Sanchez walked before Jade Smith put both in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. That’s when Burton delivered with a single up the middle to plate both and pull within 7-2.
However, UTSA would get no closer. The Roadrunners got hits in the sixth and seventh, but could not cut into the deficit any more.
Chelsea Parker took the loss for UTSA and she fell to 4-1 with six runs on six hits to go along with three walks in 1.2 innings.
The Roadrunners will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (0-8-1) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the team’s home opener at Roadrunner Field.
