SAN ANTONIO — Yannick Junger and Tomas Stillman both were victorious in singles and doubles action, but it was not enough, as UT Arlington rallied from a 3-0 deficit in a 4-3 victory at UTSA on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Junger and Stillman combined for a quick 6-2 triumph against Daniel Armengol and Mario Muniesa at No. 1 doubles. Diogo Casa and Joel Rubio then downed Pablo Colvee and Sebastian Erimicioiu, 6-3, on the third court to give the Roadrunners (2-4) an early lead.
Junger was the first to finish a singles match, as the senior from Germany made quick work of Stefan Williams in a 6-1, 6-1 sweep at No. 2 for his second win of the season.
Stillman, who is ranked No. 72 by ITA, dispatched Erimicioiu, 6-2, 6-2, at the top spot to run the senior from Harlingen's record to 4-2 on the year and put the home team up, 3-0.
The Mavericks (4-2) would rally on the other four courts to snap a three-game losing streak to their former Southland and Western Athletic Conference rivals.
Johnathan Gonzalez beat Tito Moreiras, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4 to put the Mavs on the board. Muniesa pulled out a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win at the sixth position and Carlos Abiza fought back from a 6-1 setback in the opening set against Joel Rubio with 6-2 and 7-5 decisions to knot the match at 3-3.
All eyes were on the fourth court, where Casa and Armengol had battled to a third set that was all tied up at 5-5 after the UTSA junior broke Armengol’s serve. The visitor responded by returning the favor for a 6-5 advantage and he took the final game to complete a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.
The Roadrunners will stay home to host Southern Miss at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
