HOUSTON — Emily Perez and Whitney Flannel both posted victories to lead the UTSA women's track & field team at Friday's Houston Tune-up.
Perez won the mile in a meet-record 4:58.40, which was more than two seconds faster than her nearest competitor.
Meanwhile, Flannel earned a gold medal in the high jump with a clearance of 5-7 (1.70m). It marked her third top-three finish of the indoor campaign.
The Roadrunners received five other podium finishes in their final meet before the Conference USA Indoor Championships.
Evelyn Clark (57.21) and Jennifer Arinze (PR 57.34) placed second and third, respectively, in the 400 meters, while Shantel Swift and Perez finished 2-3 in the 800m. Swift raced to a 2:18.00 in her first-ever half mile, while Perez was not far behind with her 2:18.46 clocking.
UTSA picked up another silver medal when the 1,600m relay quartet of Clark, Kelly Goudeau, Swift and Paige Patterson passed the baton in 3:51.14. They finished just 28 one-hundredths of a second behind I-35 rival Texas State.
The Roadrunners will return to action in 12 days at the C-USA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The two-day meet is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
