SAN ANTONIO — South Alabama put a halt to UTSA's three-match winning streak with a 5-2 victory on Friday.
The doubles point came down to the third and final match after Jacobea Junger and Alena Schichkova downed Monica Mitta and Laura Valkova by a score of 6-4 score on the first court following a Lina Hallgren and Nicole Karaklis 6-2 loss to Cinta Maria Papke and Paula Sanchez at the No. 3 position. However, the Roadrunners' tandem of Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Miriam Rosell Canudas fell in a competitive 7-5 match to Michaela Meszarosava and Emily Newton, which gave the Jaguars (2-0) the early 1-0 lead.
South Alabama stretched its advantage to three early in singles play, but UTSA (3-2) fired back with two consecutive victories of their own when Rosell Canudas defeated Mitta (6-3, 4-6, 6-1) at the No. 3 spot and that was followed by a Junger 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3 trimuph against Valkova at the top slot in the lineup.
The Jaguars went on to clinch the victory with wins on the remaining two courts.
Karaklis dropped her first decision of the season in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 setback to Mary Angela Martin at the No. 4 spot.
UTSA will be back in action at 11 a.m. on Sunday against UT Arlington (5-2).
