Late rally propels UTSA past Old Dominion, 52-51

NORFOLK, Va. — UTSA went on a 7-0 run in the final minutes of Thursday’s contest at Old Dominion and it went on to post a 52-51 victory at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

With 1:01 remaining in regulation, Kamra King made one of two free throws to tie the game at 51. On the ensuing possession, Akunna Elonu blocked a shot from Ashley Betz-White, which gave UTSA (12-12, 7-5 C-USA) the ball.

Jennie Simms then fouled Tesha Smith with seven seconds on the clock and the sophomore forward made her second free throw to give the Roadrunners a 52-51 lead.

Old Dominion (13-9, 6-5 C-USA) was unable to get a shot off before the clock expired and it dropped its second consecutive game.

Two Roadrunners scored in double figures with Ashley Spaletta netting a team-best 13 points. Elonu picked up her fourth double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Mannasha Bell added 10 boards.

UTSA shot 33 percent (19-of-58) from the field, including 36 (5-of-14) from 3-point range.

Simms paced the Monarchs with a game-high 32 points, the most points scored by an opponent this season.

UTSA led by as many as 11 following a 9-0 run with 6:10 to play in the opening half. Niaga Mitchell-Cole’s 3-pointer at the 9:10 mark sparked the run for the Roadrunners.

The home team came alive late in the opening stanza and used a 9-0 run to make it a two-point game, 25-23, with 2:09 on the clock. Old Dominion trailed by just one at the half, 28-27, and the momentum shifted to start of the second half.

UTSA will wrap up its East Coast swing on Saturday at Charlotte (9-13, 5-5 C-USA). Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT).
