IRVING — Bryce Alley was named Conference USA Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Alley was one of two UTSA players who tied for fifth place at 1-over-par 214 to help lead the Roadrunners to a runner-up finish at this week's UTSA Oak Hills Invitational, which was contested on Monday and Tuesday.
The Longview native fought back from an opening-round 75 with a 3-under 68 in the second round to help put UTSA in title contention with No. 5 Baylor entering the final round. Alley carded an even-par 71 — the team's second-lowest score on the final day — to help the Roadrunners hold off 20th-ranked Oklahoma for second place with an 866 (290-287-289) en route to their best finish at their home tournament since back-to-back runner-up showings in 2001-02. Alley also bettered his previous career-best finish by eight places and now has posted a sub-70 round in each of his last two events. Alley and junior teammate Brett Hogan, who also tied for fifth, were the highest finishers among four Conference USA teams.
UTSA will return to action from Feb. 20-22 when it is scheduled to compete at the Bayou City Collegiate Championship in Humble.
