IRVING — Whitney Flannel was named Conference USA Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Flannel moved to the top of the circuit's high jump standings and broke UTSA’s 20-year-old program record in the process on Friday at the Howie Ryan Invitational & Multis.
The senior from West Columbia cleared the bar on her second attempt at 5-9 ¾ (1.77m) while competing in the pentathlon and that just bettered Lynse Leal's previous mark of 5-9 ¼ (1.76m), which occurred during the 1995 campaign. It was an inch-and-a-quarter improvement from her former career best established at the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Championships and she went on the finish the five-event competition in eighth place with 3,078 points.
On Saturday, Flannel finished third and as the top collegian in her specialty event with a clearance of 5-8 ¾ (1.75m), which was an inch shy of her new school standard.
UTSA will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 13, at the Houston Tune-up.
