SAN ANTONIO — UTSA picked up its first Conference USA victory of the season with a 53-45 victory against North Texas on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Tesha Smith paced the Roadrunners (6-8, 1-1 C-USA) with her second 17-point game of the campaign to go along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Meanwhile, Mathilde Hergott added 10 points with four boards.
The 45 points allowed by UTSA was its third game this season of 49 points or less.
The low-scoring affair got off to slow start after back-to-back 3-pointers from each team tied the score with 19:13 to play. A scoring drought of 3:51 passed before Hergott pulled up for a jumper to give the Roadrunners a 5-3 lead.
UTSA closed out the opening stanza shooting 44 percent (4-of-9) from beyond the arc and it took an eight-point lead, 28-20 into the locker room.
The Roadrunners managed to maintain a steady lead throughout the second 20 minutes and led by as many as nine on another Hergott jumper with 8:29 to play.
Briesha Wynn led North Texas (1-12, 0-2 C-USA) with 13 points, to go with three rebounds, one steal and an assist.
The Roadrunners will hit the road for their next three contests beginning with a 7 p.m. tilt on Thursday, Jan. 8, at Southern Miss (7-4, 0-0 C-USA).
