IRVING — Tomas Stillman was named Conference USA Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Stillman, who is the ITA's No. 42-ranked singles player, opened the spring season with victories in both singles and doubles competition this past weekend. The Harlingen native provided the deciding point to help UTSA spoil Rice's inaugural match at the George R. Brown Tennis Center by defeating Srikar Alla, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), in a 4-3 win for the Roadrunners. The 2014 C-USA Newcomer of the Year also teamed with Yannick Junger for a 6-3 triumph to clinch the doubles point for UTSA.
The following day versus No. 60 Cornell, Stillman handled Sam Fleck in straight sets and paired with Junger for another doubles win in a narrow 4-3 loss to the Big Red. Including the fall campaign, he boasts 16 singles victories in his last 19 outings, and he also owns a 23-2 dual-match record including the 2014 season.
It marks the second C-USA weekly accolade (March 11, 2014) for Stillman, who also picked up the league's Athlete of the Month honor for September 2014.
Stillman and the Roadrunners (1-1) will open their home slate against Old Dominion (1-0) at 2 p.m. on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
