BEAUMONT — UTSA rebounded from Saturday's season-opening loss at No. 37 Houston with a 5-2 victory at former Southland Conference foe Lamar on Sunday.
The Roadrunners (1-1) were able to capture the doubles point when Lina Hallgren and Nicole Karaklis outlasted Hanna Elfving and Katya Lapayeva in a tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot, 7-6 (7-4). Jacobea Junger and Alena Shichkova picked up the squad's other doubles triumph at the top spot against Andrea Ivanovic and Carolina Maso by a score of 6-4.
UTSA then won four of the six singles contests to clinch its second consecutive victory against the Lady Cardinals (0-2).
Junger made quick work of Ivanovic in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) at the top position in the lineup, while Karaklis won her second match of the weekend at the third slot in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, against Maso.
Meanwhile, Hallgren clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Teodora Stefanovic at the No. 5 spot and Irene Gandara Gonzalez added a fifth point to the team total after holding on against Stephanie Marchena at the sixth position, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.
UTSA will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, when it opens its home slate against Incarnate Word. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
