Perry wins high jump crown at Saturday's Texas A&M Team Invitational

COLLEGE STATION — Branden Perry won the high jump title and he led a total of five podium finishes for the UTSA men's track & field team at Saturday's Texas A&M Team Invitational.

Perry cleared 6-9 ½ (2.07m) and tied with UT Arlington's Roland Sales for the top spot in the standings, but the freshman from Mansfield picked up the first gold medal of his young career by winning a jump off.

Meanwhile, Andrew Akens and Christopher Hall won silver medals in their respective events.

Akens was second in the shot put with a measurement of 57-4 ¾ (17.49m), while Hall raced to the third-best 400 meters performance in program annals with his time of 47.58. The senior from Killeen also finished fourth in the deuce with the second-best clocking in school history (21.41).

Keyunta Hayes (8.13) and Jonas Gutierrez (8.21) finished second and third, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Baylor's Bryce Grace won the event in 7.99. Gutierrez qualfiied for the final with the second-fastest preliminary heat time, 8.224, while Hayes' checked in third after crossing the line in 8.229 earlier in the afternoon.

The Roadrunners scored 66 points at one-day scored meet and they finished fifth in the nine-team field. Event host Texas A&M cruised to the team crown with 163 points.

UTSA will return to action in two weeks at the Howie Ryan Invitational & Multis. The two-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Friday, Jan. 30, in Houston.
