Roadrunners women to open spring campaign this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's tennis team will begin its spring season on the road this weekend when it travels to No. 37 Houston and Lamar for a pair of matches. The Roadrunners and Cougars will square off at noon on Saturday and that will be followed by an 11 a.m. contest with the Lady Cardials the following day in Beaumont.

Led by ninth-year head coach Erin Scott, UTSA welcomes back seven players from last season's 11-win club, including All-Conference USA performers Miriam Rosell Canudas and Jobea Junger.

Rosell Canudas posted a team-leading 18-4 record at the No. 2 singles spot during her debut freshman campaign en route to second-team all-league accolades. She was victorious in 13 of her final 14 outings of the season, including an 11-match winning streak from Feb. 16-April 6. In fact, the Torello, Spain, native captured 19 consecutive sets from Feb. 22-April 6.

Meanwhile, Junger won a dozen matches at the top position in the Roadrunners’ singles lineup and she was a third-team all-conference selection. The junior from Stuttgart, Germany, had a season-long six-match winning streak from Feb. 23-April 3 and won all of her contests during that stretch in straight sets.

The two also teamed up for third-team laurels in doubles play. Rossell Canudas and Junger posted a 12-5 mark at the squad's top doubles position and they had an 11-match winning streak from Feb. 8-April 3.

True freshman Sonia Madroñal Medina is the team's lone newcomer this year.
