FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Keon Lewis scored 22 points to help UTSA rally for an 88-83 overtime victory at Northern Arizona on Wednesday night at the Walkup Skydome.
Lewis scored 15 of his team-high total after halftime for the Roadrunners (3-3) and finished 6-of-9 from the floor, including a 3-pointer and three free throws. Jeromie Hill scored 13 of his 16 following intermission, while Kaj-Bjorn Sherman added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Larry Lewis Jr. (11) Ryan Bowie (10) and Christian Wilson (10) also reached double figures for UTSA, which shot 45.3 percent for the game and had six players score at least 10 points for the first time since a Jan. 30, 2014, win over Rice last season.
Meanwhile, Aaseem Dixon led all scorers with a career-high 31 points and Quinton Upshur added 17 for the Lumberjacks (2-6), who went 14-of-41 from behind the arc.
Jordyn Martin’s layup with 51 seconds to go in the 1st half gave Northern Arizona its largest lead of the game, 44-30, but the Roadrunners hit their next six shots and spanned the halves with a 17-2 run to grab a 45-44 edge.
The visitors opened the second half with 10 straight points and quickly got back in the game with back-to-back treys from Hill and Bowie to start the stanza. Sherman came away with a dunk and Lewis capped the run with a layup.
However, the Lumberjacks battled back and led by as much as eight, 64-56, with 6:41 remaining.
UTSA again put together a run and led 72-69 with just 46 seconds left, but Dixon’s ninth 3-pointer of the night tied the score and sent the game to overtime.
In the extra session, the Roadrunners scored the first six points and had their largest lead of the night, 84-77, with 36 seconds to go. The Lumberjacks threatened with a pair of late triples, but Bowie salted the game away with a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Northern Arizona got hot from behind the arc and broke open a close game that featured four ties in the opening minutes.
UTSA answered the bell in the early going with a 3-pointer from Lewis and three-point plays by Sherman and Wilson. The Roadrunners trailed 15-13 after a pair of Lewis free throws, but the Lumberjacks grabbed a double-digit lead with three consecutive triples.
Northern Arizona kept UTSA at arms length with eight 3-pointers in the first half, including six from Dixon that helped fuel his 20 points in the opening period, and the lead grew to as much as 14.
After going cold midway through the stanza, the Roadrunners began to heat up to end the half by hitting six of their final seven shots.
Lewis Jr. gave the visitors some momentum heading into halftime with a steal and triple in the corner in the final second, but Northern Arizona took a 44-35 lead to intermission.
The Roadrunners will look for another road victory at 2 p.m. (CT) on Saturday when they take on Washington State (3-4) at Beasley Coliseum.
