Elonu's career night leads UTSA past UT Arlington on Tuesday, 63-55

ARLINGTON — Akunna Elonu scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and UTSA downed UT Arlington by a score of 63-55 on Tuesday night at the College Park Center.

Elonu netted 13 of her career-high 15 points in the second half and she was 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.

Ashley Spaletta and Kamra King also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Spaletta shot 50 percent (4-of-8) from the field and 75 percent (3-of-4) from the line, while King was 7-of-9 from the free-throw line with three rebounds and three assists.

The Roadrunners (4-2) now have won two consecutive games and the Mavericks (3-2) lost their first home contest this season.

UTSA got off to a slow start, but a pair of Spaletta free throws to put it on the board. She then drained a 3-pointer and jumper to give UTSA its first lead of the half, 7-5, by scoring all seven points. The Roadrunners held their lead for 10:13 and led by as many as 10 at the 10:02 mark, but a 12-3 UTA run put it in front, 24-23, with 5:03 to play.

UTSA headed to the locker room down by one, 31-30, after King completed a trio of free throws on two different trips to the line.

Elonu began the scoring barrage in the start of the second half as she scored the team’s first four points. A 7-0 run gave the Roadrunners a 41-36 lead and they eventually went on a 12-0 run to lead 46-36 with 13:00 to play.

UTSA shot 42 percent (20-of-48) from the field and 63 percent (19-of-29) from the charity stripe.

Rebekah Van Dijk paced UT Arlington with 14 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double.

The Roadrunners will host I-35 rival Texas State (2-3) at 7 p.m. on Thursday. ​
