Roadrunners fall to Texas Tech on Saturday, 64-48

LUBBOCK — UTSA stayed even with Texas Tech at the half, but lost momentum in the second as they dropped a 64-48 decision to the Lady Raiders Saturday afternoon in the Athletes in Action Classic held at the United Supermarkets Arena.

UTSA was held to under 50 points for the second time this season and drops to 4-5 on the year, while Tech remains perfect at home and improve to 8-2 overall.

Kamra King was the only Roadrunner to post double figures with her second straight 20-plus point game with 20 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the charity stripe and 4-of-9 from the field.

In the first half, UTSA held Texas Tech to its third lowest scoring half this season with 22 points as both teams headed to the locker room tied (22). King and Mathilde Hergott combined for nearly half of the Roadrunners’ points with 12.

Both teams battled it out on day 2 of the Athletes in Action Classic as it saw seven ties with the final coming late in the opening stanza.

After King completed a pair of free throws with 3:05 to play to give UTSA a 22-20 lead, TTU came back to tie the affair with 1:11 remaining on a pair of Ivonne CookTaylor free throws. Half of the Lady Raiders’ points came from the line, as they went 11-of-14.

The game tied once more in the start of the second half before Texas Tech pulled away on its 54 percent (14-26) shooting in the latter half.  TTU went on a 6-0 run after Akunna Elonu evened the score at 24 with a jumper at the 19:14 mark and never looked back.

UTSA was held scoreless for 4:05 to almost end the game, but Alana Heard went up for a layup to erase the Roadrunners scoring drought.

TTU had three Raiders in double figures with Amber Battle netting a season-best 21 points with seven rebounds. Minta Spears chipped in with 15 points, including nine from beyond the arc, while Kelsi Baker added 10.

The Roadrunners will return to the United Supermarkets Arena for the final day of the AIA Classic as they take on Nicholls State (3-6) at 11 a.m.
