Smith leads Roadrunners past Lamar on Sunday, 72-40

BEAUMONT — Tesha Smith scored 16 points off the bench and senior Kamra King added 12 to pace UTSA to a 72-40 victory at Lamar on Sunday.

Smith went 6-for-7 from the field and grabbed nine boards, nearly missing her first double-double of the season. Meanwhile, King notched half her points with a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the charity stripe.

The Roadrunners (2-1) scored the opening basket and later went on a 10-0 run to lead 18-6 halfway through the opening 20 minutes. With 5:33 remaining in the half, Smith scored on a layup that started a 9-0 stretch to give the Roadrunners an 18-point lead. The Cardinals (0-4) scored the final basket of the half with four ticks remaining.

UTSA used a 17-4 run coming out of intermission to take a commanding 50-22 lead. The Roadrunners shot 50 percent (15-for-30) in the second half and went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

Lamar went scoreless in the final four minutes after Dominique Edwards netted a layup to make it 66-40, but UTSA scored the final six points of the game.

Nineteen of the Roadrunners' 39 second-half points came from the bench.

Edwards, the Cardinals' leading scorer, was held to just two points and two of Lamar’s other starters went scoreless.

The Roadrunners will host the annual UTSA Thanksgiving Classic next weekend with Drake, Fordham and Incarnate Word coming to the Alamo City.
