Thornton garners Conference USA All-Academic honors

IRVING — Dempsey Thornton was named to the 2014 Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Monday.

Thornton, who maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA in sport, event & tourism management, landed on the squad for the second consecutive season. She also was named a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII selection two weeks ago and earned the C-USA Academic Medal for maintaining a 3.75 GPA or higher in 2013. The senior outside hitter from Corpus Christi ranks fourth in kills per set (3.76) and points per set (4.07) in the league and also leads the Roadrunners with 392 kills (3.77 kps) and is tied for third with 17 service aces.

This year’s team features five repeat selections and five CoSIDA Academic all-district honorees. It is comprised of five seniors, two juniors and four sophomores as selected by the league’s sports information directors. The all-academic team consists of student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on their team.
