AUSTIN — UTSA made a late run in the second half, but it was not enough on Saturday, as No. 9 Texas outlasted the Roadrunners, 68-48, in both teams' season opener at the Frank Erwin Center.
The Roadrunners (0-1) shot 31 percent from the field and were led by freshman Carlie Heineman’s 15 points. The San Antonio native also grabbed two rebounds and had a steal. Also scoring in double figures for UTSA was senior Kamra King, who 13 with a pair of assists and one rebound.
The Big 12 Conference preseason favorite Longhorns (1-0) fired 45 percent from the field and were led by three players in double figures. Kelsey Lang put up 12 points with six boards, three blocks and three steals, while Brianna Taylor added 11 and Empress Davenport had 10.
The first 7:11 was a low-scoring contest, as UTSA held a 7-6 lead, which lasted 41 seconds. Texas quickly responded with a three from Brooke McCarty and never looked back.
The Longhorns led by as many as 16 in the first half and headed to the locker room with a 31-15 advantage.
