Roadrunners lend helping hand at Ava's Wish 5K Run

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s basketball team was up bright and early on Sunday morning, as it volunteered for Ava’s Wish at the Second Annual “Tennies and Tiaras” 5K Run at Eisenhower Park.

The partnership with Ava’s Wish began last fall and has continued through this year. The women’s team helped with registration, along with handing out runner’s packets and medals.

Ava’s Wish was started in 2009 after an intoxicated driver struck then 18-month-old Ava, sister Isabella and mother Traci in their front yard. Ava miraculously survived the traumatic event and continues to be an inspiration to all.

“It is a testament to our team’s desire to give back to the San Antonio community," head coach Lubomyr Lichonczak said. “Participating in events such as Ava’s Wish allows the team to be that support system for somebody else in need. You never know when you’ll make someone’s day.”

The goal of Ava’s Wish is to provide support to pediatric patients with head trauma or other related disorders and act as a resource for the child’s family members. Last year’s event raised more than $22,000.
