TUCSON, Ariz. — Miriam Rosell Canudas ran her fall singles record to a perfect 8-0 to lead the UTSA women's tennis team at last weekend's Wildcats Invitational.
The sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, won all four of her matches in the Wildcats Main Draw for her second championship of the fall campaign.
Rosell Canudas opened the tournament on Friday with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Northern Arizona's Marta Lewandowska and she then dropped her first set of the season before defeating UTEP's Duda Santos (2-6, 6-3, 7-5). Saturday saw her hand Mississippi State's Louise Ronaldson a 6-1, 6-3 setback and she concluded action the following day with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph against Jennifer Brown, who also hailed from Mississippi State, in the title match.
Rosell Canudas now has won all eight of her tournament matches this fall, seven of which have come in straight sets.
Meanwhile, Jacobea Junger won three contests after dropping her opener in the Wildcats Draw. The junior from Stuttgart, Germany, rebounded for wins against Texas State's Eva Dench (6-2, 6-2), North Arizona's Hailey Rochin (6-2, 3-0 retired) and Marquette's Ana Pimienta (6-4, 5-7, 10-7) for the consolation crown.
Irene Gandara Gonzalez, Nicole Karaklis and Alena Shichkova all won a pair of matches to open the event before falling in the third round.
UTSA will return to the courts in two weeks at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships in Fort Worth. The four-day tournament, which will conclude the Roadrunners' fall campaign, is slated to get underway on Friday, Oct. 16.
