SAN ANTONIO — Rice jumped ahead with a goal in the first minute and never looked back in a 3-0 win at UTSA on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.
Anka Grotle led the Roadrunners (5-5-1, 1-2 C-USA) with four shots, while Happy Orere-Amadu came off the bench to post three attempts.
Meanwhile, Holly Hargreaves added to her team-leading goal total with a pair of winners to pace the Owls (7-1-2, 3-0 C-USA).
Rice, which entered the week receiving votes in the NSCAA Top 25, wasted little time jumping ahead. Just 21 seconds into the match, Samantha Chaiken left a perfect pass that Hargreaves deposited in the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Hargreaves struck again in the 23rd minute after taking a pass from Lauren Hughes for her second goal of the match and eighth of the fall.
Trailing 2-0 to start the second half, the Roadrunners opened the period with a strong offensive push, but the Owls defense would not break.
Quinny Truong extended the lead for the visitors in the 64th minute after taking another assist from Hughes. The strike capped the scoring as UTSA threatened but could not break through in the final 26 minutes.
The Roadrunners will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, when they host North Texas (8-3, 2-0 C-USA).
