Roadrunners to head north to Denton for Saturday's Conference USA Championships

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will begin the postseason on Saturday morning when it competes at the Conference USA Championships in Denton. The 5,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at North Texas' Eagle Point Cross Country Course. The Roadrunners are the defending meet champion.

UTSA has won six league crowns in program history. The Roadrunners captured three consecutive Southland Conference Championships from 1991-93 and then won back-to-back titles in 1995-96 before last year's victory.

After two years of being on the brink of a conference title, the third time proved to be the charm for the Roadrunners a season ago. Led by Nina Herrera's fourth-place finish, UTSA captured the program's first league crown in 17 years, but it didn't come without drama, as the Birds tied Tulsa with 67 points but won the head-to-head tiebreaker, 3-2.

Stephanie Wangui and Emily Perez both finished in the top 15 to lead the squad two weeks ago at the Crimson Classic.

Wangui covered the 5,000-meter Harry Pritchett Running Course in 17:48.16 en route to 13th place and the senior from Leander paced the squad for the third time in four meets this season. Meanwhile, Perez was one spot behind her teammate in 14th after clocking a 17:48.62.
