SAN ANTONIO — Brogan Townend carded a 1-under-par 71 to lead the UTSA women’s golf team on the first day of The Alamo Invitational, which began on Sunday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/6,428 yards).
Townend, a junior from England, battled back from a 38 on the front nine with a 33 on the back that was highlighted by a birdie on the par-five 11th and an eagle on the par-five 13th. She is in a tie for 16th place with 36 holes remaining.
Behind Townend’s under-par round, the Roadrunners posted a 6-over 294 and are in 11th place, one shot ahead of No. 49 Texas (295) and one behind Texas Tech (293).
No. 5 Arkansas and 24th-ranked Auburn are tied atop the leaderboard at 13-under 275, which ranks as the second-lowest round in tournament history. Those two are trailed by No. 27 LSU (279), No. 20 Texas A&M (283), Florida State (286), Baylor (289), Texas State (289), Oklahoma (291) and No. 40 Tulane (292). Houston, 36th-ranked SMU and TCU are tied for 13th (296).
Nikki Long is two shots back of Townend in a tie for 33rd after firing a 73, while Becky McGeehan and Abby Portyrata both shot 75 and are in a tie for 52nd. Aimee Ponte and Libby Thomas, who is competing as an individual, are tied for 67th (77).
Auburn’s Sophia Schubert registered a 7-under 65, tied for the second-lowest round in tournament history, to claim the day-one individual lead.
Round two is slated to get underway with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
