SAN ANTONIO — Aimee Ponte fired a 1-under-par 71 to highlight Monday's second-day action for the UTSA women’s golf team at The Alamo Invitational.
Ponte, who teed off on No. 10 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/6,428 yards), began her season-best round with a 34 on the back that was keyed by birdie-threes on the 10th and 14th holes. The sophomore from St. Sampson’s, U.K., also posted a pair of birdies on the front to help offset three bogeys. The 71 was one shy of her UTSA career-best 70 recorded in the final round of last year’s The Alamo Invitational. Ponte is tied for 39th in the field at 4-over 148 with 18 holes remaining.
Abby Portyrata carded her second straight 75 on the strength of four birdies and is tied for 52nd at 6-over 150. Nikki Long is two shots behind her fellow freshman in 59th with a 73-79—152. Brogan Townend is tied for 66th (71-84—155) and Becky McGeehan (75-82—157) and Libby Thomas (77-80—157), competing as an individual, are tied for 68th.
The Roadrunners are in 14th place at 25-over 601 (294-307), four shots ahead of 49th-ranked Texas (605).
No. 27 LSU leads the field at 13-under 563 behind day-two leader Caroline Nistrup (66-70-136). The Tigers are followed by No. 5 Arkansas (567), 24th-ranked Auburn (570), Florida State (575) and No. 20 Texas A&M (577).
The final round is slated for an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
