SAN MARCOS — UTSA wrapped up its fall campaign with a total of 13 victories at Saturday's Texas State Play Date. The Roadrunners were victorious in 11 of their singles matches, including all six in the opening round, and they also won two of their three doubles outings.
Irene Gandara Gonzalez and Lina Hallgren both led the way with three wins apiece.
Gandara Gonzalez opened tournament play with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Prairie View A&M's Tatiana Ruhl and she went on to hand Prairie View's Sydney Thomas a 6-0, 6-1 setback in the second round. The senior from Cordoba, Spain, also teamed up with Sonia Madroñal Medina for a 6-3 doubles triumph against Texas-Pan American's Lison Le Biavant and Julia Perez.
Meanwhile, Hallgren downed Texas State's Ana Laura Gutierrez in the first round, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, before getting past Texas-Pan American's Mariana Ranzahuer in consecutive 6-4 sets. The sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden, and Alena Shichkova picked up a doubles victory with a 6-2 win against Prairie View A&M's Stacey Lackey and Taylor LeFridge.
Daniela Garcia-Diaz, Nicole Karaklis and Madroñal Medina also won their two singles contests.
