FIU scores twice in second half to down Roadrunners, 2-1

SAN ANTONIO — Anissa Munson gave UTSA a first-half lead, but FIU scored twice in the second half to rally for a 2-1 victory on Friday night in Conference USA play at Park West Athletics Complex.

Munson added to her points lead for the Roadrunners (5-10-1, 1-7 C-USA) and tied for the team-lead with three goals. The senior took a pair of shots for the home squad, as did Gracie Knight and Happy Orere-Amadu.

Meanwhile, Shelby Bowden supplied the game-winner for the Panthers, who improved to 8-7-1 overall and 3-3-1 in C-USA action. Goalie Nevena Stojakovic allowed one goal and made three saves in the winning effort.

Munson helped the Roadrunners jump ahead early with her winner in the 17th minute.

After Stojakovic punched away a UTSA cross, the goalie got tangled up with another player which left the goal open for Munson, who collected the loose ball and found the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners defense limited FIU to just one shot in the period and UTSA took a one-goal advantage into halftime.

However, the Panthers turned up the pressure and finally broke through in the 57th minute.

Caroline Hernandez took a loose ball and let fly a shot from about 35 yards out and the blast beat goalie Katherine Tesno to knot the score at one.

FIU continued to press and came up with the winner in the 86th minute. Madlen Weinhardt lofted a corner kick to the far side of the goal, where Bowden headed the ball home for her second goal of the fall.

UTSA tried to rally, but it could not come up with the equalizer in the final four minutes.

The Roadrunners will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host Florida Atlantic (7-7-3, 2-4-2 C-USA).
