COLLEGE STATION — A trio of Roadrunners combined to win six singles matches to highlight action for the UTSA men's tennis team at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, which concluded Monday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Seniors Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman provided four of the victories in the main draw, while junior Diogo Casa posted a pair of triumphs in the consolation bracket.
Stillman, the No. 12 seed in the event, drew a first-round bye and then dispatched John Mee of Texas with a 6-1, 6-4 win on Saturday. The Harlingen native edged SMU's Nathaniel Lammons, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 32 before being ousted by No. 46-ranked and seventh-seeded Jeremy Efferding of Texas A&M, 7-6, 6-3, on Sunday. Stillman, the Conference USA Player of the Month for September, now owns a team-best 14-3 singles record this fall.
Rubio opened singles competition with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Marco Bensley of Abilene Christian in the round of 128 on Saturday. The Arnedo, Spain, native then outlasted Texas Tech's Connor Curry, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, before falling to Michael Riechmann of Texas, 7-6 (1), 6-3, in the round of 32.
Meanwhile, Casa fought back from a 6-4, 6-3 setback to No. 65-ranked and eighth-seeded Hugo Dojas of Texas Tech in the round of 64 with a run to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. The Pelotas, Brazil, native upended a pair of Texas-Pan American players with a 6-3, 7-6 decision against Elliot Johnstone in the round of 32 and a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over Hector Ramirez before falling to Frankie Colunga of Texas A&M, 7-6, 6-2, in the final eight.
The Roadrunners will conclude their fall season at next weekend's Texas Invitational. The three-day tournament is schduled to get underway on Friday, Oct. 31, in Austin.
