SAN ANTONIO — Riding a four-match winning streak, the UTSA volleyball team will hit the road for a Friday night matchup at Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. and will then welcome UTEP on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners sit second in the Conference USA standings with 3-0 mark in league play and a 7-7 overall record. UTSA has notched conference wins against UTEP, Florida Atlantic and North Texas.
UTSA is hitting .207 through 14 matches this season and is averaging 13.39 kills per frame with a league-leading 16.61 digs and 2.16 blocks per set. In conference-only matches, UTSA ranks in the top-three in most categories and leads the league in assists (14.90 aps), kills (15.80 kps) and digs (18.10 dps).
Outside hitter Dajana Boskovic is averaging 4.11 kills per frame to lead the Roadrunners offense. Dempsey Thornton adds 3.64 kills and 1.61 digs per set.
Sophomore Jessica Waldrip picked up her second straight C-USA Setter of the Week award this past Monday after collecting 137 assists over three matches. She is averaging a league fifth-best 10.09 assists per set and also ranks 102nd in the country. Waldrip ranks 10th in the UTSA top-10 all-time assists records with 1,314.
Middle Tennessee (5-10, 1-1 C-USA) enters Friday’s match eighth in the conference standings and 2-3 in their last five contests. The Blue Raiders won the last meeting between the two teams in Tennessee by a 3-0 score.
Chelsea Ross paces the Blue Raiders offense with 3.80 kills per set, which ranks third in the conference behind UTSA’s Boskovic. She also leads the team with 14 aces.
UTEP (2-12, 0-3) will face Rice on Friday before traveling to San Antonio on Sunday. The Miners are riding a five-match losing streak with their last win coming against Nevada at the Denver Invitational.
The Roadrunners won the last meeting between the two teams in El Paso two weeks ago. UTSA won in straight sets – 25-23, 25-11, 25-21.
Sunday’s home match against UTEP will also be designated as the Roadrunners’ Dig Pink match. A silent auction will run through the duration of the match with winners announced in the third set.
