Pair of second-half goals helps UTEP top Roadrunners on Sunday, 2-0

EL PASO — UTEP scored twice in the final 45 minutes to take a 2-0 victory against visiting UTSA in Conference USA action on Sunday afternoon at University Field.

Led by four attempts from Charlotte Husoe, the Roadrunners (5-9-1, 1-6 C-USA) out-shot the Miners (10-5-2, 4-2-1 C-USA), 15-7, but they could not find the back of the net. The UTSA defense limited UTEP to just three shots on goal, but the home squad made the most of its chances.

The Roadrunners held a 6-3 edge in shots in the scoreless opening period.

The match remained scoreless until the 52nd minute, when Tayloer O’Hayre found Aleah Davis in the box and she sent a header past UTSA goalie Katherine Tesno for a 1-0 advantage. The strike was Davis’ fourth of the fall and caused the Roadrunners to turn up the offensive pressure.

UTSA registered nine shots in the second half, but UTEP goalie Sarah Dilling made seven saves in the period to preserve the shutout.

The Miners doubled the lead in the 87th minute, as Dilling sent a long kick to Jeanna Mullen, who beat Tesno for the 2-0 final margin.

The Roadrunners will close the regular season with three consecutive home matches, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Oct. 24, against FIU (7-7-1, 2-3-1 C-USA).
