SAN ANTONIO — Four members of the UTSA men's tennis team will compete at this weekend's USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships. The three-dy tournament will get underway on Saturday at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
Seniors Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman, junior Diogo Casa and freshman Mark Ginting will represent the Roadrunners during singles and doubles draws during the three-day event.
Stillman is the No. 12 seed seed in the singles bracket and will face the winner of the round of 128 match between John Mee of Texas and Michael Feucht of Lamar at noon on Saturday. Stillman, a Harlingen native, won his first 12 matches of the fall campaign, including all six en route to the Rice Fall Invitational title, and carries a 12-2 record into the tournament after making a run to the main singles draw at the ITA All-American Championships. The 2014 Conference USA Newcomer of the Year was named C-USA Athlete of the Month for September.
Rubio will open singles action against Marco Bensley of Abilene Christian at 9 a.m. Saturday in the round of 128 and the Arnedo, Spain, native will team with Stillman as the No. 8 seed doubles pair. They will open play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the round of 32 against the winner of the round of 64 match between Abilene Christian's Paul Domanski and Bensley against Texas A&M's Francisco Colunga and Max Montague.
Casa will receive a bye to the round of 64 in the singles draw, where he will match up against the eight-seed Hugo Dojas of Texas Tech at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Ginting also has a round of 128 bye and will play Francisco Zambon of Texas Tech at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Casa and Ginting also are slated to open the doubles bracket against Trevor Johnson and Cameron Norrie of TCU at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
