BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Happy Orere-Amadu notched her first goal of the fall, but Western Kentucky jumped out to a 2-0 lead and came away with a 3-1 win over UTSA in Conference USA action on Sunday afternoon at the WKU Soccer Complex.
Goalie Katherine Tesno made six saves for the Roadrunners (5-8-1, 1-5 C-USA), who dropped their fourth consecutive contest. UTSA finished with 18 shots, including a match-high seven attempts from Orere-Amadu.
Meanwhile, three different players scored for the Lady Toppers (7-5, 2-3 C-USA) to help the home squad snap a three-match skid of their own. Allison Leone matched Tesno’s effort with six stops and Shayna Dheel came off the bench to score a goal on a team-best five shots.
UTSA turned on the offensive pressure early with 12 shots in the opening period, only to see Western Kentucky take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the 42nd minute, Caitlin Hesse found Alex Lonnemann for a strike from 20 yards out that slipped past Tesno for a 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Toppers doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 51st minute when Iris Dunn and Hesse combined to set up Dheel’s winner.
However, the Roadrunners would not go away and sliced the deficit in half in the 57th minute.
Freshman Gracie Knight picked up her first point of the season with an assist to Orere-Amadu and the senior put UTSA on the board. She became the 10th player this season to score and provided the Birds with their first goal since a 3-0 win at Middle Tennessee on Sept. 28.
That would be as close as the Roadrunners would get, as Bria Mosley put the game away with a goal in the 88th minute for the final 3-1 margin.
UTSA will look to snap its skid at 2 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, Oct. 19 when it travels west for a matchup at UTEP (9-5-2, 3-2-1 C-USA).
