HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Kelly Culcerto converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute to lift Marshall to a 1-0 victory against UTSA in Conference USA action on Friday night at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
Katherine Tesno recorded eight saves for the Roadrunners (5-7-1, 1-4 C-USA), who dropped their third consecutive league match. UTSA was limited to just two shots, which came from the feet of Sabrina Gonzalez and Jenny Trommer.
Meanwhile, the Thundering Herd (5-4-3, 2-1-1 C-USA) managed 17 shots, led by six from Culicerto. Lizzie Kish made one save en route to her second shutout of the fall.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, as both defenses kept the match scoreless.
Tesno picked up five saves in the period, while Marshall totaled eight shots.
The contest stayed a draw until the 50th minute, when UTSA was whistled for a foul in the penalty box.
Culicerto beat Tesno on the ensuing penalty kick for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.
That proved to be all the Thundering Herd would need, as the defense held the Roadrunners without a shot in the final 45 minutes.
UTSA will be back in action with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday at Western Kentucky (6-5, 1-3 C-USA).
