BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Kimberly Fincher and Johanna Liney each scored a pair of goals to lead UAB to a 5-0 win over visiting UTSA on Friday night at West Campus Field in the Conference USA opener for both squads.
The Roadrunners (4-4-1, 0-1 C-USA) out-shot the Blazers (4-5, 1-0 C-USA), 19-17, but were shut out for the second consecutive match. Anka Grotle led UTSA with seven shots, while Anissa Munson and Kauwela Neal each tallied four.
Meanwhile, Kasey Johnson helped fuel the UAB offense with three assists. Goalie Angelica Jimenez faced a barrage of shots on the night and came away with 11 saves.
In the 17th minute, Munson nearly put the Roadrunners ahead. The senior slipped a shot past Jimenez only to see a UAB defender step in and fill the empty net to keep the match scoreless.
However, it did not stay that way for long.
Mary Catherine Combs found Fincher in the 26th minute to put the home squad ahead 1-0. Less than three minutes later, Liney got on the board with her first goal of the night off a feed from Rachel Green.
Despite 12 shots in the period, the Roadrunners could not find the back of the net and went into halftime trailing 2-0.
The Blazers kept UTSA off the board and pulled away with three goals in the final 20 minutes, all of which were set up by Johnson.
Fincher and Liney traded goals in the 71st and 77th minutes, respectively, and Amy Brewer capped the scoring with her first goal of the campaign in the 87th minute to provide the 5-0 final score.
UTSA will look to get back on track at 2 p.m. on Sunday, when it travels to Murfreesboro to take on Middle Tennessee (3-5-1, 0-1 C-USA).
