SAN ANTONIO — Six members of the UTSA men's tennis team will travel to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships, which will get underway on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Seniors Yannick Junger, Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman, juniors Diogo Casa and Jacob Rother and sophomore Tito Moreiras will represent the Roadrunners in the pre-qualifying singles draw on Saturday-Sunday. Rubio and Stillman also are slated to compete in the doubles competition.
Last year, Casa and Junger teamed up for a run to the main doubles draw. The duo earned a spot in the final 32 by registering four qualifying section victories, including upsets of No. 4 seed Guillermo Alcorta and Axel Alvarez of Oklahoma (8-5) and No. 15 Johnny Grimal and David O'Leary of Miami (8-5). Casa and Junger were eliminated in the consolation bracket by the sixth-seeded pair of Manfred Jeske and Mike Nott of Arkansas.
Junger also advanced to the third round of last year's pre-qualifying singles bracket, while Casa, Rubio and Stillman all posted triumphs in the opening round. Rubio and Stillman also advanced to the third round of the qualifying doubles draw.
The Roadrunners are coming off a solid performance at last weekend's Rice Invitational.
Stillman captured the singles crown with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Rice's David Warren after upsetting the No. 2 seed, Baylor's Tony Lupieri (3-6, 7-6 [6], 11-9) in the semifinals of the 64-player bracket.
Rubio advanced to the quarterfinal round after an upending third-seeded Jamie Malik of Rice (1-6, 6-2, 10-6) in the round of 16 before falling to Stillman. Junger and Moreiras both advanced to the semifinals of the consolation singles bracket before the event was called due to weather.
