WOLCOTT, Colo. — Led by 76s from both Becky McGeehan and Aimee Ponte, the UTSA women's golf team jumped into ninth place after Tuesday's second of three rounds at this week's Golfweek Conference Challenge at The Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club.
McGeehan and Ponte helped the Roadrunners card a 309 and move up five spots into a tie with Texas State at 623 in the team standings with 18 holes remaining. The duo now is tied with junior teammate Brogan Townend for 39th place at 155 in the individual standings.
McGeehan, a freshman from Germany, posted a pair of birdies on the front nine en route to a 1-under-par 35 and helped negate a double bogey on the par-4 13th with a birdie three on the next hole.
Meanwhile, Ponte, a sophomore from the United Kingdom, registered four birdies — two on each side — in matching McGeehan with a three-stroke improvement from Monday's opening 18.
Townend fired a 78 after posting the team's low round, 77, on Monday. Freshman Nikki Long, a San Antonio Johnson product, turned in a 79 and is three shots behind her teammates in a tie for 50th at 158.
Defending champion Pepperdine and Tennessee are tied for the team lead at 6-over 582, followed by Campbell (592), Denver (594) and Louisville (594). Pepperdine's Marissa Chow and Campbell's Louise Latorre are knotted atop the individual leaderboard at 1-under 143.
The final round is scheduled to begin with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday.
