Roadrunners in 14th place after first day of Golfweek Conference Challenge

WOLCOTT, Colo. — The UTSA women's golf team is in 14th place after the first day of the Golfweek Conference Challenge, which began on Monday at the Tom Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club (par 72/6,249 yards).

Led by a 5-over-par 77 from Brogan Townend, the Roadrunners carded a 314 and are one shot ahead of New Mexico and one behind Georgetown. Townend recorded a pair of birdies in her opening round and is tied for 43rd with 36 holes remaining.

A trio of Roadrunners is two strokes behind Townend. Nikki Long, Becky McGeehan and Aimee Ponte all turned in 79s and are tied for 58th.

Defending champion Pepperdine leads the 17-team field after posting a 4-under 284 on the strength of co-leaders Alina Ching and Tatiana Wijaya, who both fired a 4-under 68. The Waves are followed by Tennessee (285), Campbell (290), Denver (293) and Louisville (293) in the top five.

Round two is slated to get underway with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m.
